Tip of the Week: How to Change Your Default Browser in Android

Any devout user of Android devices knows that Google Chrome is probably going to be the default browser on their devices, but what if you wanted to, for whatever reason, use a different one? There is a way to change the browser used on your Android device, and it all starts with knowing which browsers are available for use.

First, decide which browser you want to use. There is Mozilla Firefox, as well as Microsoft Edge, but many, many others too. Heck, today you can even use Safari on your Android device (not sure why you would want to). Just make sure that whichever browser you opt for is secure and reputable. The last thing you want is to use a browser that, say, harvests your credentials or other inconveniences.

Next, open the Settings application on your phone. It should look like a gear icon. It’s available in various locations, such as the tray that opens when you swipe down on your device, or from the applications screen. From your settings, you want to select Apps, then Default Apps (or Choose Default Apps). Finally, select the Browser App setting.

From here, you can select the browser application you want to use, as long as it’s installed on your device. The next time you try to open a link, it should open up in your default browser of choice.

It’s worth mentioning here that you should always run installing a new application on your device by your IT department. This way, you can make sure that the application you are installing is secure and capable for your needs. Who knows? Your IT department might even be able to give you some ideas for apps to download!
